Real Madrid finally got their revenge in Europe versus Liverpool mid-week at Anfield destroying the Reds in a 0-3 whitewash; however the loss was not as devastating a blow to Rodgers’ Champions League campaign as it could have been all thanks to Ludo Razgd FC.
Madrid are now on top of Group B with 9 points out of 9 having beaten all 3 of their opponents; Liverpool, FC Basel and Ludo Razgd. For Liverpool, who once dominated Real Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield have dropped 6 out of 9 points after suffering two successive defeats; firstly to FC Basel away, and secondly the recent 0-3 home defeat versus Madrid.
However, the situation could have been much worse, and Liverpool fans were all too aware that the opposite fixture between the Ludo Razgd versus FC Basel was equally as important as their Real Madrid encounter.
With Madrid expected to beat Liverpool, all eyes in the Liverpool camp were on the Ludo Razgd versus FC Basel game. Should FC Basel have won that match, Brendan Rodgers may have been facing a tougher run into the final stages of the group phase. Liverpool would be 3 points behind FC Basel and with little hope of beating Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the next game, FC Basel would return to their home ground versus Ludo Razgd expected to turn over another 3 points with just Real Madrid and Liverpool left on their scope.
For Liverpool, the pressure would have been on. 6 points behind second place and 2 games remaining versus Ludo Razgd and FC Basel where nothing less than 3 points would guarantee qualification. Fortunately for Liverpool, Ludo Razgd made use of their home advantage grabbing their first win in the Champions League and denying FC Basel the chance to go second in the group.
The result couldn’t have been better for Rogers and his men as this leaves second, third and fourth places in the group all equal on 3 points. Liverpool are once again expected to lose to Real Madrid when the team travels to Madrid on 4 November still missing Daniel Sturridge. If FC Basel do pull out a home win this time around versus Ludo Razgd, Liverpool will only be trailing 3 points instead of what many believed would be a 6 point gap before the mid-week fixtures were settled.
After Madrid, Liverpool will be travelling to Ludo Razgd with one thing on the team’s mind – 3 points. FC Basel will be expected to lose versus Madrid leaving Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying in a game versus FC Basel at Anfield. Should Liverpool go into that game still on just 3 points, the Reds will be relying on Real Madrid to inflict a goal frenzy on Ludo Razgd, who would go into the game at the Bernabéu with a superior goal difference to Liverpool – and Liverpool will looking to put as many past FC Basel who will be no threat on goal difference.
Looking at the stats, Liverpool could lose their next 2 Champions League away games and hammer home a massive win at Anfield at the last; while hoping Real Madrid do the same in Madrid giving Liverpool a sneaky back door into the second round.
