The last few weeks have been a positive time for Liverpool Football Club with a string of good performances going hand in hand with good results, the only exception to this being our loss against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Overall, our season has taken a turn for the better after we managed to get back and stay on winning ways. The good news is not just limited to results on the pitch for Liverpool though after the club proved that they were keeping the future in mind when they tied star man Philippe Coutinho down to a long term contract.
The 22 year old put pen to paper on a new and improved deal with the Reds that will see him stay at Anfield till the end of the 2019-2020 season. Coutinho has been a revelation for us ever since he signed from Inter Milan in January, 2013 in a deal that cost us 8.5 million pounds. Standing at this point of time, the sum that we paid Inter seems to be just peanuts as he is surely worth at least three times that amount right now. The Brazilian has been an ever present for us as he has already made 32 appearances this season with more than three months still left to go in the campaign. His performances have certainly been eye catching and none more so than the one against West Ham at the weekend when he set up both our goals with two fabulous assists.
His pass to Daniel Sturridge for our second goal of the night was straight out of the top drawer and it is these kinds of passes that would easily grab the attention of Europe’s big guns who would be lining up a swoop any minute. If his assists have not been enough to grab the headlines then the 90th minute winner that he scored against Bolton to seal the FA Cup Fourth Round replay in our favour is surely the stuff that would have the world of football drooling. Keeping this in mind, it was essential that we tied him down to the club with a new and improved deal that would do justice to the player’s quality, and it gives us fans so much relief to see that we have in fact done this before it became too late.
Overall, whatever has happened, did so for the best as both parties involved were interested in getting the deal done as soon as possible. Coutinho himself was keen to sign a new deal with the Reds and the excitement that he showed in his interview with the club’s website after he put pen to paper was there for all to see. At the end of the day, this is a brilliant bit of work by Liverpool and we Kopites can definitely breathe a bit easier knowing that our star man will not be going anywhere, at least any time soon.
With progress being made both on and off the pitch, the future seems bright for the Reds and it shouldn’t be long before we’re back where we belong, that is on or around the summit of the Premier League table.
